With given name
To stir the soul
On intrepid hoof
Ten wide I load

Anticipating only
An opening of gate
My heart pumping fire
Having been schooled to wait

So look for me
Where the turn meets the stretch
I'll be the one
That leads by a neck

With this thought dominating
A problem it poses
So I feed on the strain
Having tasted the roses

Some never try
Some never stop trying
Right now I am the difference
Between living and dying

Kicking clear on the backside
An open garden spot left
I begin inhaling opponents
Like a favorite cigarette

With nothing but daylight
Between me and the wire
I break spirits on dirt
To satisfy inborn desire

Crossing the line
Catching breath in one blow
I understand only to win
Lest place or show

Collecting silver cups
As ruler of this oval nation
Ladies and gentlemen presenting
A horse named "Citation"
