My guess is that this is Escadru. He ran second to Citation in the Derby trial, finished last of the 6 in the Kentucky Derby, then finished 3rd in the Belmont. I couldn't find any other pictures of him so I can't be sure, but I looked at a video on Youtube (from ESPN's "Jewels of the Triple Crown")... there you can make out Escadru's name from the entry list just below Citation and Coaltown, so post 2. Looking at the race, you can see that the 2 is wearing white blinkers like the horse in this picture and you can see that that horse (the 2 with the white blinkers) finishes poorly (he's 5th coming around the far turn).

Apparently there used to be on the internet a picture of the finish of the 48 Belmont including Escadru far behind Citation, but the link wouldn't open... the yahoo search description of the item said that Escadru was on the left and finished 3rd. There is a small picture in an article on the bloodhorse that says it is Citation winning the Belmont... there is a horse behind him, and it appears that it is wearing blinkers (you can see a little bit of the cups sticking up around the right eye)... that horse is on the outside which would explain why he'd be on the left of a photo of the end of the Belmont.

I couldn't actually prove that this horse is Escadru, but it's a good guess and maybe you'll be able to confirm that it's him since I think you have more access to these images than I do.
I tried to link to the information I used, but it didn't let me.

Thanks SO much for your detective work! Next time I go into my boxes, I'll pull out the 1948 American Racehorses book and see if they have a photo of Escadru. I've never heard of him, but it sounds as if he was a not-bad racehorse.
Thanks again! I so appreciate the help with the detective work!

This is probably Escadru. He did finish 3rd. in the Belmont S, that year,
